What is a Three-Way Coference?

Three-way conferences are a joint meeting between teachers, parents, and learners and act as a bridge into Student Led Conferences which we hold at the end of the year. This type of conferencing allows learners to take responsibility for their own learning and provides families the opportunity to actively engage in the learning process. 

Teachers are present to guide the learner while supporting them in building the independence and confidence they need to take the lead when the time comes for the Student Led Conference. By allowing students to participate in conferencing, we give them more agency and ownership over their learning, which can lead to more engagement in class.

At a 3WC learners have the opportunity to share learning reflections and goals, student portfolios, and selected works. Often in a PYP classroom the learning process is actively displayed on the walls, and this can act as a part of their learning portfolio as well. 

Parents are encouraged to ask questions and engage in positive discussions with their child about their learning, goals and areas for improvement. We can also engage the parents in the learning process by inviting them to participate in a shared activity with their child. This allows parents to build deeper connections with their child and experience how they learn first-hand.

To prepare for a 3WC, learners will have an opportunity to evaluate, reflect, and take responsibility for their own learning. When learners take the time to think about their successes, strengths, areas for growth, and set goals for the future, they are being reflective. 

Three-way conferences also facilitate the development of organizational and oral communication skills, which PYP learners will use to demonstrate that they are knowledgeable and communicators.
