Safety First | Epidemic Prevention Measures

20 Feb 2023

In the new semester, although the peak of the epidemic has passed, regular self-protection is still essential. In response to the government's call, Concordia actively launched a series of lectures on "Safety First", and school nurse Ms. Chen brought tips on campus epidemic prevention to help children grow up healthily.

Why should we wash our hands?

Hand washing is effective in removing hand dirt and bacteria, preventing contact infections, and preventing respiratory infections such as influenza. The Study have shown that washing hands with water and hand sanitizer alone, the incidence of skin herpes can be reduced by 34%, the incidence of diarrhea by 53%, the incidence of pneumonia by 50%, and the incidence of hand, foot and mouth disease, which is easily spread among younger children, can be greatly reduced.

Especially the norovirus that causes students to vomit and diarrhea, this virus is mainly transmitted through food-borne, water-borne and human-to-human contact, and washing hands regularly is one of the important ways to prevent norovirus.

Six-step Washing Technique

Rub the palms of both hands together

Cross your hands and scrub your fingers

Palms on palms rubbing finger crevices

Fingertip rubbing on the palms of the hands, same for left and right hands

Bend the fingers so that the joints are rotated and rubbed in the palm of the other hand, and exchange them for 5 rubs each.

Hold the thumb of the other hand in one hand and rub it, and rub the left and right hands together for 5 times.

How to choose a mask?

Masks can be divided into air-filtering masks and air supply masks, which have the function of blocking harmful gases, odors, droplets, viruses and other substances. When respiratory infectious diseases are prevalent, or when working in a polluted environment such as dust, wearing a mask has a good defensive effect.

Use the mask correctly

The darker color of the mask is the front side, facing outward; the lighter color side is the reverse side, worn right on the face.

Some masks are equipped with metal strips for nose clips, and the metal strips are located at the top of the mask.

Wash your hands, distinguish the front and back of the mask, the upper and lower ends, and then hang the rope at both ends on your ears.

After the mask is worn, use both hands to press the metal strips on both sides of the bridge of the nose, so that the upper end of the mask is close to the bridge of the nose; then stretch the mask downward, so that the mask does not leave a crease, and fully cover the nose and mouth.

It should be noted that: medical surgical masks should be replaced in time after 4 hours of use.

Enhance awareness of hygiene and health, exercise in moderation and improve your immunity.

Maintain good personal hygiene habits and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough.

Ventilate your room and keep it clean and hygienic.

Inform teachers and parents if you have fever, dry cough, fatigue, sore throat, etc.

Avoid going to crowded or confined places as much as possible. If you must go, please wear a mask properly.

Starting from this semester, our school nurse will bring a Concordia Health mini-lecture to the students every month, using professional knowledge to help children armor themselves with self-protection armor. Concordia hopes that every child can establish life safety awareness, master good self-protection skills, and be their own first safety guardian!
