Background of Yueju Opera

In this field trip, students first drank in some background knowledge of Yueju Opera. They listened to the teachers’ stories about the origin and development of Yueju Opera as well as the classic plays. It was as if they were travelling through time and space and conversing with the past and present of Yueju Opera.

The students delved further into the performing art of Yueju Opera and tried to play the roles of Sheng and Dan. Under the guidance of the teacher, they personally interpreted the steps and expressions of the characters, as if the characters in the painting came out from the stage, showing the unique picturesque beauty of Yueju Opera.

In order to experience the charm of Yueju Opera at a deeper level, teachers and parents experienced the art of Yueju Opera make-up together. Under the hands of professional make-up artists, they were transformed into a beautiful Yueju opera character, with gorgeous make-up like a blooming flower, glowing with colours. At this moment, it was as if they had travelled through time and space and felt the splendid charm of Yueju Opera.

The actors' exquisite skills, and the profound cultural connotations, intoxicated the students with this love story that has been passed down through the ages. They were touched by the joys and sorrows of the characters in the play, and marveled at the superb performances of the actors.

At the end of the activity, students discussed with teachers and parents the question of, "Why do we still need Yueju Opera?" They were inspired by the clash of ideas and expressed that Yueju Opera, as an important part of Chinese traditional culture, carries a long history and deep cultural heritage.
