Concordia Ningbo Outdoor Activity Policy in Relation to Air Pollution

Purpose

To ensure the health and safety of students during outdoor activities, particularly in relation to air quality, and to provide clear guidelines for staff and students when air pollution levels are elevated.

Policy Guidelines

Air Quality Monitoring

· The school will monitor air quality levels daily using IQAir as the primary source.

· AQI levels will be checked daily before outdoor activities, including Physical Education (PE), sports, outdoor play, and field trips.

· The PE Department is responsible for monitoring AQI levels and notifying teachers of any changes to outdoor activities.

Air Quality Index (AQI) Categories and Actions

The following actions will be taken based on AQI levels:

AQI 0–149

✅ Outdoor activities continue as scheduled.

· All outdoor activities, including PE, sports, and recess, may proceed.

· Students with asthma or respiratory conditions should be monitored and may participate based on individual health needs.

· Educators will assess conditions on the day and make an informed decision.

AQI 150–199

⚠️ Outdoor activities modified or moved indoors.

· Strenuous outdoor activities (e.g., running, competitive sports) will be modified to lighter activities or moved indoors.

· Students with asthma or respiratory conditions will participate in light activities or remain indoors.

· Outdoor activity time reduced:

o Early Years: maximum 15 minutes

o Primary & Secondary: maximum 20 minutes

· Educators will assess conditions on the day and make an informed decision.

AQI 200+

❌ All outdoor activities canceled or moved indoors.

· No outdoor activities (PE, sports, recess, or field trips) will be permitted.

· All students must remain indoors with windows and doors closed.

· Air purifiers should be used in classrooms where available.

Precautionary Measures

· Ensure students with known respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma) have updated health plans and access to necessary medications.

· Encourage students to stay hydrated and wear appropriate clothing to minimize exposure to pollutants.

Indoor Alternatives

· Develop a list of indoor activities (e.g., yoga, dance, games, or educational videos) to replace outdoor activities when air quality is poor.

· Ensure indoor spaces are well-ventilated and free from indoor pollutants (e.g., dust, mold, or strong cleaning chemicals).

Field Trips and Special Events

· Check AQI levels before scheduling field trips or outdoor events.

· Have a contingency plan to relocate activities if air quality is poor.

Review and Evaluation

· This policy will be reviewed annually or as needed to ensure it aligns with current health guidelines and environmental conditions.

· The PE Department and school leadership team will be responsible for reviewing and updating this policy based on staff, student, and parent feedback.
