协和幼儿园亲子观星日 | Discovering the Unknown Wonders of the Universe

07 Jun 2023

Background

The vastness of the starry universe always brings endless imagination to children. At Concordia, we embrace the philosophy that the environment as a third teacher for children and emphasise the significance of the environment to their education.

In this month, the children of Concordia Kindergarten unlocked the mysterious theme of astronomy and explored the endless mysteries of the universe with their teachers and parents.

Explore Astronomy

To give the children deeper

understanding & review of astronomy

Concordia Kindergarten

 invited a mysterious friend

"Astronomical Telescope"

On the evening of the event, children and their parents observed a romantic astronomical phenomenon - "Venus with the Moon".

At 6pm, the sun set over the playground of Concordia, the evening sun spread across the sky, and night slowly fell as a pale moth-brow moon slowly rose into the sky to Venus.

Meet “Hubble”

The children were excited to see this Hubble telescope working in Earth orbit for the first time. It has succeeded in bridging the gap between ground-based observations, helping astronomers to solve many fundamental problems in astronomy and allowing mankind to gain a greater understanding of astrophysics.

Wander the Solar System

Earth, Mercury, Venus... What do they look like? What are their characteristics? And what colours do they have? The children reviewed what they had learnt about the planets in the solar system in class through a mini-game.

The children in classes K1A and K1B gathered around the solar system star travel chart, pulling the edges of the chart with their hands so that an earth-shaped ball on the chart passed the eight planets in turn, and if they missed a planet they needed to go back to it and continue down the chart.

Led by their teachers, the kindergarten children took a game tour of the eight familiar planets, revisiting their astronomical knowledge and enhancing their sense of teamwork.

The Castle of the Stars

The second game, 'Star Castle', was also an excellent way for children to collaborate as a team. Each child was randomly given 1-2 astrological cards with information such as the astrological star's name, shape and number.

The children can take turns going to the star chart according to this information and placing the cards on the corresponding numbers and pictures on the airbrush. This game allows the children to learn and understand the 28 astrological constellations in a fun and educational way.

Sky Gazing

The highlight of the event was the gathering of all four telescopes at the school's Sky Tennis Court to observe the beautiful sight of Venus with the Moon.

Three of the telescopes were used to observe the moon, which looked like a beauty. Children and parents can clearly see the moon craters on the moon's surface through the telescopes. One was used to observe the bright and massive planet Venus, the distance of which brought the children endless reverie.

About Us

Romantic times are fleeting. It is worth noting that during this "Venus with the Moon", the Moon and Venus overlap in the middle of Gemini and they are like objects in the arms of Gemini, like children of the Concordia Kindergarten happily nestled in the arms of their parents, gazing up at the stars together.

At the same time, Concordia believes that in a supportive and material-rich environment, children are more likely to be self-driven and to develop a wealth of interests and ideas.
