Dear PYP Parents,
I hope you’ve had a fantastic week! Thank you, as always, for being such an important part of ourlearning community. Your support helps create a rich and engaging environment for our children.
This week, I want to share more about Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills—the foundation of how children learn. These skills don’t just help in school; they shape how children think, communicate, and engage with the world for life.
What Are ATL Skills?
ATL skills are essential learning-to-learn tools that apply across all subjects and life situations. They help children become curious, independent, and resilient learners.
There are five key ATL skill areas:
Thinking Skills
Encouraging problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking
Communication Skills
Developing confidence in expressing ideas and listening actively
Research Skills
Teaching children how to find, evaluate, and use information.
Social Skills
Building empathy, teamwork, and respect for others.
Self-Management Skills
Strengthening independence, organization, and emotional well-being.
Why Do ATL Skills Matter?
At CISN, we teach ATL skills not just for academic success, but to prepare children for an ever-changing world. The ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and adapt to new challenges will be crucial for their future studies, careers, and relationships.
Students who develop ATL skills:
Become curious, lifelong learners
They ask great questions and explore solutions
Engage meaningfully with the world
Building awareness and empathy
Solve problems creatively
Developing resilience when facing challenges
Take ownership of their learning
Setting goals and reflecting on progress
How Do We Teach ATL Skills at CISN?
We integrate ATL skills into everyday learning at both Kindergarten (CISNK) and Primary (CISNP) through:
Inquiry-Based Learning
Encouraging children to ask questions and seek answers
Units of Inquiry
Applying ATL skills to real-world topics
Group Work & Play
Strengthening communication, cooperation, and problem-solving.
Self-Reflection
Helping students set goals and assess their growth
By making these skills part of daily learning, we help children gain confidence, take initiative, and enjoy learning.
How You Can Support ATL Skills at Home
Encourage curiosity
Ask your child questions and explore answers together
Read together
Discuss stories and share different perspectives
Teach organization
Help them manage time and tasks independently
Foster global awareness
Talk about cultures, traditions, and world events.
Even small moments—like encouraging your child to ask “why” or reflect on their day—can strengthen ATL skills and build a love of learning.
Thank You!
I love seeing our students grow into confident, curious, and capable learners, and I know this happens because of the support they receive at home as well. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out—we’re always happy to answer questions.
Wishing you all a joyful and relaxing weekend!
